Life in the Balance

My life hangs upon the ropes
And digs and scrapes and pulls
I sometimes slip upon the peels
Or get chased by screaching gulls.

There’s a monkey on my back
That makes it hard to win
He gleefully torments me
To tears and my chagrin.

A dissonance invades my ears
Wheels spin without control
I sink beneath the blackened hills
A clown commands my soul.

But there are days of sunny green
When I enjoy the breeze
And color fills my joyous heart
I stand sturdy with the trees.

A clown no more, but jester sweet
I glide on wings and smile
A laughter rings from Dowland’s lute
I sing, “Sweet, stay awhile.”

The rascal that I was before
Does not disrupt my act
I balance him in harmony
And keep my dreams intact.
