Fairies in the City:  The New York Adventures
of Dew and Drop

A thirteen-chapter story-poem about the cultural adventures of two fairies from the Adirondack forest that take a tour of New York City.

Chapter One:  The Journey Begins

Dew and Drop, two fairies frantic
Great energy unbound
Said Fairy-King, “Just one more antic,
“I’ll tie you to the ground!”

“Great Fairy-King, we so revere
Don’t blame us for our fire
We fuel on tricks, good fun, and cheer
Adventure we desire!”

“Dear children,” said the Fairy-Queen
“We know so well your plight
Your nature comes from forest green
In creatures you delight!

As humans often make their tracks
And on our trails ascend
To their realm, to view their acts
As students we will send.”

“Oh, Great Adirondack-Lord!
We thank you with our hearts
Queen Mother, we were getting bored
We know so well these parts.”

“But I will warn, you must observe
The city will amaze
Beware your pranks and check your verve
Be careful of your ways!"

"To humans, do not come too near
They possess a different guile,”
Before the King made himself clear
Dew and Drop had flown a mile!
“

From fairy realm to border cross
To seek the world outside
Without a map and at a loss
Where does glimmer-city hide?

They followed thunder-herd below
That runs with circled-feet
At night they travel, eyes aglow
On road they call concrete.

Dew and Drop pursued quite close
And chased a boisterous beast
They breathed a most unhealthy dose
Of air they liked the least.

“I do not like this noxious mist
My sight, disturbed and grey,"
Drop coughed and sneezed and roughly hissed
"Let’s fly to water-way!”

A better path for Dew and Drop
Awaited them quite near
They crossed a field of farmer’s crop
Once more their vision clear.

“Most majestic, wondrous course!
O, river guides us true
This feels much like our woodland force
We’ll float on breeze straight through.”

As our fairies, dreary-dazed
Lofted on the gentle breeze
Lifted wings, while they praised
Sweet moments such as these

“What giant bird on Father’s back?
Or winged-whale does ride?
Wind fills the wing just like a sack
Bright flags wave on the side.”

Dew flew to play with streaming banner
Drop bounced off wind-blown wing
They frolicked in a fairy-manner
To the moon began to sing.

Brother whale, eye opened wide
Beamed warm and piercing glow
But what is this? A man inside?
Emerged from room below.

A swimming-house, not whale, nor swan
That stopped while man did lurk
He folded wing that soon was gone
Tossed hook to end his work

“What magic comes from humans here?
In water they may dwell
Great city, not their only sphere
My mind rings like a bell!

Oh Drop, to yonder field we fly
This journey's just begun
Let’s follow treetops up on high
And bask in rising sun.”

Chapter Two:  The Big Park

The fairies two soared as the lark
To seek out different play
Came upon most wondrous park
At the dawning of the day.

“What gentle lake so blue and calm
With pleasant fountain mist
It soothes like a most fragrant balm
For sleep, I must insist!”

Dew and Drop laid down to rest
Among the lily flower
With anxious thoughts, they did their best
To slumber but an hour.

Awakened by a human horde
Most laughter-filled and free
With mind’s eye, they walked toward
A stage for all to see.

“Oh Dew, they seem a jolly crowd
Their actions do confound
But hark, so still, and no more loud
As they sit upon the ground.”

When nothing moved for minutes few
But humans and their plates
Drop felt the pang of hunger too
That sight of food creates.

“Let us fly to honey dew
And drink our bellies full
For I’m not sure what’s here to do
These humans are too dull.”

When Dew and Drop did have their fill
Of nectar rich and sweet
They returned to platformed hill
On the way to their retreat.

“But what appears from window fair
From which dim light does glow
What prince in wonder does so stare
In garden down below?”

Mesmerized by beauty rare
Dew and Drop took pause
“Oh Romeo, Romeo!"  filled the air
They dropped their little jaws.

“What fairy beauty in human form
She must be revered queen
Her voice serene and elf-like warm
Let’s stay in woodland green.”

Dew and Drop absorbed by magic
Shed tears at every scene
When lady slept, for Drop too tragic
Dew had to intervene.

“Awake fair queen, embrace this life
And drink my fairy dust
Remain to stay the prince’s wife
To rule this realm, you must!”

Fair maiden then began to twitch
Dew became most pleased
From death to life she now will switch
Then suddenly, she sneezed!

From humans sounded quiet moan
Our lady’s eyes showed terror
The actress knew the scene was blown
And begged forgiveness for the error

The fairies two, perplexed anew
By such a strange behavior
She lives because the caring Dew
Became her woodland savior.

“Once jolly crowd begins to ramble
This dream is once unsure
 See how hastily they scramble
This place has lost allure.”

Flew fast away, our forest friends
Across beloved lake
To seek adventure till it ends
Whatever it must take.

 Chapter Three:  The Art Museum

    "Majestic palace, wondrous halls
I see straight in our flight!
What Wizard dwells within those walls?
Come playful friend and sprite!”

Upon the stairs of palace great
Where Dew and Drop did hover
Humans gathered, stood in wait
What treasures to discover?

“Follow pilgrims through this portal
My fairy-sense does shiver
What lies within, beyond mere mortal?
My wings are all a-quiver!”

Dew and Drop then darted through
The door to stunning treasure
Dazzling objects came in view
Such beauty beyond measure.

“What kings and queens of milk white hue
Do stand in time so frozen
Is this the work of witch’s brew?
Why were these captured chosen?”

“I know not why this judgment came
I feel a fairy’s sorrow
These lovely princes, movement tame
Shall live beyond tomorrow.”

“Had I but stronger fairy dust
Could give liveliness to stone
I’d free this lady from her rust
Return her to her throne."

Dew and Drop left sullen room
And whisked through golden halls
Where objects shone like springtime bloom
Dreamlike visions on the walls.

“What glorious sights in crafted border
These colors do bedazzle!
Surface light, mystic order
Let's pause, my mind’s a frazzle.”

Sweet fairies sat on golden edge
To take much needed rest
And heard one to a small group pledge,
“See Corot at his best!”

“I do believe, said Drop to Dew
King Corot has magic power
Feelings strange, are they in you?
How he captures lake and flower!”

“Pale goddess in such calm repose
By gentle light blue sea
Like Elven maid, a blooming rose
Intoxicated, free!”

“Such sacred crafts by human hand
Did you know they could exist?
We must see more, let’s understand
By magic we are kissed.”

Dew and Drop then softly cried
Bewildered they did feel
Floated dazed until they spied
Such calm that seemed unreal.

A smaller view then did appear
Serenity unveiled
Young woman stood at window clear
Through which soft sunlight sailed.

“I almost feel her breath on air
Behold her silken clothes
See the light from pitcher flare
Her face with wisdom glows.”

“She beams with quiet strength and pride
Deliberate, content
And harbors secrets deep inside
Some personal event?”

“Dew, I feel we’ve much to learn
Of beauty and shared sphere
How my desire now does burn
Like sage, or mystic seer.”

Dew and Drop then gently sighed
And both seemed to agree
That it was time to go outside
Much more there is to see

Chapter Four:  The Marathon

Just in time, back through the door
In sunlit park, attractive
A horde of humans at some chore

So full of life and active.

“What throng is here, determined mind
What game has here begun?
Let's take a closer look behind
Perhaps we may have fun!”

From head to head did fairies flit
In frolic, darting chases
On funny hats the two would sit
To tickle human faces

When all at once a rumbling sound
Evolved at shot of gun
The humans’ feet began to pound
As they started all to run

“What noise is this, what new commotion?
I’m dizzy, can’t see through
I’m rolling, tossing in this ocean
Where are you, friendly Dew!?”

“I can barely hear you, Drop
I bounce from chest and waist
My head is spinning like a top
This game’s not to my taste!”

In steamy sweat and bodies’ heat
They tumbled and were trapped
When they tried so to retreat
They fumbled as wings flapped

Our woodland friends began to fright
And lost their fairy-smiles
At last they grabbed on shirts so tight
Rode twenty-six long miles!

When their steeds in time did halt
They tumbled to the grass
“In this game, I don’t exalt!
We’re still and calm, alas!”

“Our King did warn of human trick,
To safely keep our distance
Their cunning was surprising, quick
We should question our persistence.”

“The fault was ours, I’d clearly say
At mischief we were caught
What’s done is done, let’s go our way
A lesson we were taught!”

Straight back into the leafy shade
In welcome wooded-glen
Their energy began to fade
They’ll sleep till who knows when?

  Chapter Five:  The Opera

Dew and Drop slept very sound
Four hours, maybe five
Ready for another round
To roam and feel alive

As they opened eyes so wide
And gazed beyond the green
The glow of city lights outside
Entered this night’s scene

“Although this park is very pretty
Such adventures we did share
Time to see the Glimmer City
At night when all’s a flare!”

“Straight away! Where gay lights glow!
Let’s leave familiar wood
At evening time, we fairies show
Our talents, as we should!”

Dew and Drop, with awesome speed
Flew to ringed-path
Saw carriage with a trusty steed
But did not show their wrath

Horses fairies love to tickle
As you may have heard
But magic made their own ears prickle
A song, not from a bird!

“We must find the mystic source
That emanates such wonder
Quickly Drop, adjust your course!
Like lightning to this thunder!”

With fairy ears so heightened true
A crystal hall they found
They winked their eyes to show they knew
From here comes sublime sound!

They slid beneath great doors of glass
To hear such vocal pride
And music played with song, alas!
On stage a dragon died!

“Upon great lantern we shall perch
To hear this tale unfold
Our king bids us to do research
We’re students, so we’re told!”

Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja!
A man-bird sang so proud
Stets lustig heissa hopsasa!
So thrilled became the crowd.

“See his plume so green and yellow
With him I’d like to play!
What happy notes, a charming fellow
What joy he does convey!”

Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön
A dazzling prince did sing
Brilliant and unfaltering tone
Throughout the hall did ring

“In love’s sweet spell is brave prince lost
I sway to heartfelt song
We know so well, there’ll be a cost
Let’s hope our hero’s strong!”

Magic spirits, bells, and flute
To story introduced
Then from on high came blazing queen
Our friends delighted on their roost!

“Oh, tremble not, beloved son!”
With tears sang sorrowed-queen
“By noble strength, you’ll be the one
For the princess, whom you’ve seen!”

But Dew and Drop, with fairy sense
Felt something less than just
That starry queen had some pretense
Not sure yet whom to trust

Then prince and bird went on their quest
And met a wise old man
Who put their bravery to the test
As wise men only can

In temple walls where princess lay
So sad by recent capture
Seeking out a brighter day
In our prince she may find rapture

“I fear this story’s quite a jumble”
Dew whispered right to Drop
“Again we hear the thunder rumble
Starry queen comes from the top!”

“She seems to me a bit unglued
Her appearance shows a rage!
I think that she enjoys this feud
See blade she bares on stage!”

“Abuse I cannot tolerate
Protect sweet maiden’s head!
The angry queen must abdicate
Before she brings sweet lady dread!”

Then Dew and Drop approached the queen
And tangled in her hair
“Pull harder Dew, this lady’s mean!”
While she hotly sang her air.

“Our interference works, it seems
What piercing notes are these?
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha she screams
She sounds as if to sneeze?”

“Be gone you wicked starry hag!
And leave this girl at rest
We support the wise man’s flag
Of peace and love that’s best!”

Dew and Drop watched till the end
And beamed with knowing pride
A magic love-dust they did send
Till bird-man found a bride!

The hall soon filled with laughter
And Prince and Princess wed
Lived happily there after
When fairy love was spread!

“Let’s fly tonight! Our work is done!
I feel I’m almost deaf
Evil queen that we made run
Sang C’s and pierced high-F!!”

So Dew and Drop had found a seat
At six hundred twenty Köchel
Would not allow true love’s defeat
And caused the queen’s debacle!

Chapter Six:  The Big Square

“Drop, we seem to stay indoors
More than I did expect
We don’t always have these chores
These humans to inspect.”

“That’s correct my dear friend, Dew
Go back to glittering night!
Keep our fairy-spirits true
What pictures in my sight!?”

In a flash as fairies fly
They came upon a square
A night time canvas, painted sky
Buildings soared into the air!

Displays of dazzling colored lights
And giant talking heads
Sparkled from the building heights
In blues and greens and reds

“What makes these pictures shine and glow?
And come to life-like vision
From where does awesome power flow?
Is this wizard’s deft precision?”

Dew and Drop gazed all around
At frenzy down below
As if a playground they had found
Their dizziness did show.

Caught in a hypnotic trance
They twirled without a care
Until a specter did advance
To make them more aware.

“Dew, wake up! I'm feeling trapped!
And feel we’re compromised
Before our energy is sapped!
We're much too mesmerized!”

Dew and Drop then left the scene
And honking of the cars
To find a place that's more serene
Illuminated by the stars

“For moments we were quite amused
In that wild display
But I am still a bit confused
About that strange array!”

So Dew and Drop remained unsure
About the buildings’ glare
But, doubtless, they felt more secure
In Mother Nature’s care.

“I long for home said tired Dew
Have we seen enough?”
“No said Drop, let's see this through
We’re Fairies and we’re tough”

“Onward then, my brave Drop
See more of this great isle!
Our travels have not reached their stop
Said Dew with knowing smile”

But Dew and Drop both needing rest
Flew back to lily flower
To continue when refreshed
Recharged with fairy-power!

Chapter Seven:  The Big Building

Our fairies woke with sparkling glee
Their little minds abuzz
Wondering what was next to see
So curious…just because.

They took to wing at morning hour
To seize the light of day
A building of enormous power
Stood directly in their way.

Dew and Drop in reverence gazed
And marveled at the tower
From below they sat amazed
While trying not to cower

In moments few, there formed a cue
Of families thrilled and bright
Doors opened as they went straight through
To see this wondrous site.

“Dew, stay close and follow me
To see what lies within
If witches in this place we see
I’ll need you, my fair twin!”

Drop marched behind the people filed
Humming nervous tunes
Dew danced a jig with merry child
Playing with balloons.

The doors began to quickly close
Dew found herself left out
In tiny room, on human toes
Drop began to pout.

“Follow me on the outside
I’ll meet you at the top
In this box I’ll take a ride
To windows I will hop!”

Towards the clouds at rocket-speed
Dew flew to aid her friend
To altitudes she did not need
Nor would normally ascend.

Dizzily, Dew reached the peak
Drop was pressed upon the glass
“With me I think you wish to speak
First let the seagulls pass.”

“Oh Dew, this feeling is quite new
From you I'm now apart
Your part of me, and I of you
An arrow's pierced my heart!”

“Oh do not fret I gently plea
This feeling will subside
Tell me what from there you see
For I am not inside”

Drop deeply sighed and blinked his eyes
At horizons in the round
And could not hide his great surprise
“This city does astound!”

Dew shrugged her wings with half a smile
“I'll believe your heartfelt words
When I am not a quarter-mile
In the sky above most birds.

I am going straight back down
To sit in friendly tree
Take heart my friend, erase that frown
And soon you will be free”

The tour was short as Dew surmised
Drop once again did peer
At magic that the humans prized
New York, they held so dear.

Back down the elevator shaft
Drop was quite excited
Sped back to Dew and shyly laughed
"I'm glad we’re reunited!"

Chapter Eight:  The Big Bridge

They came upon a glorious span
That crosses water-way
What artful and ingenious plan
What laws it must obey!?

A soaring path most splendid
That gleams like dragon’s wings
To the heavens seems suspended
An avenue for kings!

“This, no woodland bridge to guide
It’s open tower beckons
I'll race you to the other side!”
Which Dew flew in three seconds.

They frolicked in the steely web
While crossing water blue
And watched the river’s gentle ebb
On the top took in the view

“GRAAAH!” screamed Drop!  Look down below!
A troll camp in our sights?!
By their visage they do show
Most nasty, troll-like blights

A sudden urge, these beasts to tame
Took hold of Drop and Dew
Instincts never bringing shame
Like fairies through and through!

I’ll tug his beard, I’ll slap his toes
And make his tummy ache!
I’ll scratch his eye-lids, punch his nose!
In ugly feet, he’ll quake.

Then Dew and Drop sped on fire
Toward the beasts’ abode
And circled flames with feelings dire
Their enemies to goad !

"If he sits not by himself
Torment his nearby mate
We fairies love the gnome and elf
But ghastly trolls we hate!"

About to start a certain fray
With mischievous fairy-skill
Suddenly, Drop halted play
As if he’d lost his will.

I sense a different energy
From these three lost souls
Look closer and I think you’ll see
These beings are not trolls!

Then Dew alighted on a rock
Drop fluttered near a face
A bearded-man began to talk
From his humble place.

How sad and lonely we appear
In our down trod states
Forced to take our refuge here
With cold and empty plates.

I had my little business
In flowers and bouquets
Not always did I have distress
Those were better days.

Dew and Drop now felt his pain
As if it were their own
From weeping they could not refrain
They heard the others groan.

Thank you kindly little sprites
For visiting our home
I can see you on these nights
When through
New York you roam.

“He can see and knows we’re near
What vision does he possess?!”
Yes, your presence is quite clear
I feel your sweet caress.

Bless your little fairy-hearts
You bring us joy and peace
Your love of nature does impart
A spiritual increase.

Dew and Drop remained awhile
Until the old man went to sleep
Upon his face there was a smile
A memory to keep.

They blessed the three forgotten souls
Sprinkled dust without delay
Protecting them from wicked trolls
Or harm that comes their way.

Chapter Nine:  The Dragon's Lair

Dew and Drop left their friend
A seer quite unique
Fairies, some will comprehend
If they take the time to seek.

As their little wings did lift
Them to the crisp night air
No plan in mind, they went adrift
Without a single care.

“What doorway there upon the walk?
See steps go underground
What creatures in the dark so stalk?
Hear that rumbling sound?”

“I refuse to follow there!
Said Dew with frightened chill
This must be a dragon’s lair!
Or cave where goblins kill”

“Dragons here just can’t reside”
Said Drop most brave and stout
“In mountain caves they like to hide
To keep all others out.”

Cautiously below they went
To explore the dim-lit hole
Nervously on their descent
Like fairies on patrol.

Underneath some folks at wait
Just staying in one place
“What a strange and boring state
We need a quicker pace.”

“Let’s see where steely rails do go
Ahead through tunnel dark.”
“This will cause some awful woe
I’d rather not embark.”

But Drop led on without a pause
As Dew held on so tight
Wondering what unnatural laws
Ruled this lair at night.

Chilling winds began to blow
Strange monster loudly roared
Metallic dragon, eyes aglow
Behind them swiftly soared.

“Must I give heed to every word?
You conjure in your brain
Into a dragon’s nest we’re lured
Their breath could cause us pain!”

Dew and Drop then quickly fled
Like lightning in a storm
To a platform where folks tread
That seemed to be the norm.

From the tunnel they did vault
And hovered at the side
The monster came to screeching halt
Doors opened on a slide.

“This is no ferocious dragon,”
Drop said with grinning face
“It looks as if some worm-like wagon
Led us on this chase.”

From the worm some folks appeared
Went on their merry ways
Dew and Drop were greatly cheered
A marvel they could praise.

The giant worm then left its stop
And chugged upon the tracks
Dew and Drop sat on the top
While sparks flew at their backs.

With great joy they took a ride
Ascended the last stairs
Into the night with fairy-stride
To see to their affairs.

Chapter Ten:  The Amusement Park

A salty breeze they soon did feel
That wafted through the air
Near sandy shore, a giant wheel
So gaily lit and fair.

"What festive ring on which folks sit
That cycles round and round?
I'd like to try it, I admit
Here does fun abound!"

"I agree, see how it feels
To grace your spinning throne
I'll chase that racing box on wheels
And ride like a cyclone."

While Dew sat firmly in her chair
By mother and her child
Of lovely sights became aware
Scenes both calm and wild.

Drop attached to speedy train
That roared in twists and turns
Great laughter he could not contain
He lost all real concerns.

"Again, again," he bravely called
"Let little dragon fly!
With this ride I am enthralled
But cannot tell you why!"

When the coaster finally stopped
Drop was quite fulfilled
Faster speeds he knew he'd topped
But never felt as thrilled.

Dew and Drop watched the folk
Play at funny games
Then followed sweetly-scented smoke
From tent with candle flames

Behind a sparkling orb, a witch
Her hands bejeweled with rings
"Come hear your futures, if you itch
To know of future things."

Two humans sat beside the sphere
"We'd like to know our fate.
Of gypsy magic have no fear
Here's money in your plate."

You'll fall in love and find success
And live such happy lives
I see you in a nice blue dress
At tea with other wives.

Dew giggled at the rare display
Dropped rolled his doubtful eyes
"There is no magic here today
I think the lady lies."

Witch closed her eyes and bowed her head
And clasped her weathered hands
She glared like giving life to dead
And gave some harsh commands.

Beware of fairies spreading doubt
My crystal ball does warn
If they do, just send them out
With bitterness and scorn.

Some are good and some are bad
Some nice, some very rude
If accusations make me mad
With fairies I will feud.

Fairies learn when they come here
Some human-folk are charmed
Many ways to be a Seer
Don't look so alarmed!

"This gypsy-lady speaks in rhyme
That makes to me no sense."
The man declared, "What waste of time!
I tire of this pretense."

"Oh gentle witch, we understand
A lesson we have learned
We accept your reprimand
A scolding we have earned."

I hold no grudge to fairies young
Who learn from when they err
I've learned much from Fairy tongue
Great principles we share.

Continue on your city-tour
And sprinkle me a touch
Of  your magic fairy-cure
That comforts me so much.

"With our hearts we do comply
For the kindness you have shown
Great wise mother and ally
With vision like our own."

Chapter Eleven:  The Dance Party and the Mermaids

Dew and Drop left the tent
And followed walk of board
Deeply breathed the sea air scent
Felt lively and restored.

They joined the folks on promenade
Heard sounds that did entice
And came across a band that played
With energy and spice.

"This music is so full of life
As fairy Bacchanal
Dancing that cuts like a knife
Much like a pixie ball."

Saucy rhythms, clave beats
Drums, bells, and horn
Zesty spirits, vocal treats
Guitars and keys adorn.

"See the men with grace and charm
Guide ladies on the floor
Who spin and twirl off gentle arm
In harmonious rapport!"

Dew and Drop began to dance
Followed beats as best they could
Took on proper Latin stance
To show they understood.

Viva la musica!,  a call from stage
The crowd sent up a roar
We have to stop, it's been a rage!
From the crowd, "One more!"

"These sounds of joy we must import
To the forest glen
This culture calls for our report
To our musician kin."

For hours in hypnotic glide
Flavored rhythmical bliss
Our little fairies felt the pride
Of Salsa's magic kiss.

The party lasted until dawn
Embraced by morning dew
To mystic energy they were drawn
By something that they knew.

"Drop, this seems like fairy's call
Familiar, yet unsure
These spirit sounds so enthrall
So gentle and demure.

Dew and Drop, not knowing why
Drifted towards the force
Feeling something wondrous nigh
From Earth's mysterious source.

Out to sea, across the waves
Without hesitation
Over ancient sailors' graves
On this investigation.

Upon the rocks, a way off shore
Sat amazing creatures
That fairies learned of from the lore
With folk- and fish-like features.

With reverence they approached quite near
To greet the ocean Fae
Come closer little fairies dear
And celebrate this day.

"O, great fairies of the sea
So beautiful and fair
We're honored by the company
Of ones we find so rare."

We are always here to meet
Our cousins from the wood
Every year we take this seat
To share what's pure and good.

Blessings from the Mermaid Queen
That rules beneath the tide
We share the world that's in between
Where we all reside.

For Fairyland is everywhere
In mountains, plains and seas
What you learn, beyond compare
Understanding all degrees.

Now you've seen the human ways
Strange wonders that they bring
You navigated city's maze
And had your summer fling.

Your king bids you to return
We speak with him at will
In language you have yet to learn
A learned-fairies' skill.

"We thank you kindly seaborne sprites
That you told us this
May we practice woodland rights
And leave you with a kiss?"

On each cheek, they kissed three times
With every honor due
With excitement, speaking rhymes
Back to the bridge they flew.

Chapter Twelve:  Lady Liberty

"I saw mermaids, mermaids two
So beautiful and wise
I saw mermaids, mermaids two
With my sleepy eyes."

I saw mermaids, saw them too
With golden locks of hair
I saw mermaids, just like you
I love them, I declare!"

Dew and Drop sang rhymes galore
So giddy they were seen
By creatures that they so adore
From underwater green.

Our friends were so delighted
 A half a mile high
Met a lady who invited
One more sad good bye.

"What great lady from the sea
Queen in monument?
With saddened eyes, she seems to plea
For the end of some torment."

"May we sit upon your crown
To recall the time we spent?
In your city, so renowned
That you represent."

They stared calmly at the sea
And back to city grand
Realized balance was the key
To preserve the land.

For fairies and the city folk
Share our Mother's space
Buildings, ships, birch and oak
Can thrive, with modest pace.

Dew and Drop began to weep
And wished the humans joy
Hoping that the Earth they'd keep
For all life to enjoy.

"Drop, I feel it's time to leave
To be with our own kind
Our stories they just won't believe
Or that we're so refined!

With the speed of lighting strike
They flew back to their land
Realized they were so alike
Alighted hand-in-hand.

Chapter Thirteen:  Homecoming

Dew and Drop were quite relieved
Back in the woods to roam
But felt a little bit aggrieved
For nobody was home.

They searched the forest high and low
No fairies could they find
"O, what strange and fearful woe
I think I'll lose my mind!"

Then at once in puffs of cloud
The fairies did surround
And formed a ring, a joyous crowd
Their family finally found.

The Fairy-King sat in his throne
With Fairy-Queen beside
"Dew and Drop, I hope you've grown
And your vision's become wide?"

Quickly Dew began to mutter
"Dear King, you won't believe!"
Drop nervously began to stutter
"What humans can achieve!"

The fairies all began to laugh
"O, Oracle, advise!
Advocate on our behalf,
Dew and Drop so wise!"

"Teach us, we are simple Fae
Not so bold and bright
The thought of travel does dismay
We're fearful of the night!"

The Fairy-Queen gently smiled
And winked her pleasant eyes
"We see you have become beguiled
With our big surprise."

"You're childhood you've left behind
You've taken the grand tour
To witness city's human-kind
We think your now mature."

"Every year we send two sprites
To see the world outside
And peer upon the city lights
To learn how we abide.

"Now you'll learn our higher skills
True fairies' magic touch
Not child's play that once gave thrills
Your powers will grow much!"

"But first we all will celebrate
Your wonderful return
Many stories we'll relate
Let fairy fires burn!"

"Drink fairy-ale and be merry
Dance a pleasant reel
Let the winds our spirit carry
For anyone to feel!"

The fairies twirled their happy ring
With marvelous fairy speed
Musicians played!  A time to sing!
The forest fairy creed.

Every year young fairies take a tour of New York City
To learn the ways of human-folk, the lovely and the gritty

Human-folk weave their magic, by arts and fine creation
And find some marvelous ways to spend time on recreation

We fairies like to sing & dance and see the world outside
For joy and love and wisdom belong to fairy-pride

Fairy-folk serve Great Mother and guard the sacred wood
We pray for peace and harmony.  Protect the common good.

We'll learn your culture, please learn ours, for knowledge is the way
To nurture hope for better things and see a brighter day!

We fairies like to sing & dance and see the world outside
For joy and love and wisdom belong to fairy-pride

Give thanks for blessings of the Earth and care for every life
When you visit forest lands, listen for our fife

The Adirondack Woodland Fae will sprinkle you with dust
If you respect our magic home and gain our sacred trust

Don't be surprised if in your parks you sense a mystic force
You may see us lurking there, if you believe, of course

We fairies like to sing & dance and see the world outside
For joy and love and wisdom belong to fairy-pride
